Newberry College may celebrate its 150th day of remembrance of service & training leadership to the Newberry community, South Carolina, & to the Lutheran Church within 2006.

Newberry's heritage began around 1828 at a annual meeting of the Lutheran Synod within South Carolina & Adjacent States--about Thirty years prior to it was chartered as a college per State of South Carolina. At that 1828 meeting the Rev. John Bachman, President of the Synod, recommended the establishment of a seminary to train Lutheran ministers. the charted month a Synod followed his advice & voted to establish a seminary & authoritative academy.

A recently seminary-academy opened its doors inside February 183l, touching Pomaria, South Carolina (about Xv miles from either a College's present location); it moved to neighboring Lexington, South Carolina in 1834 and remained there for ended Twenty years.

At a prevent of a war, the exclusively college building was occupied by federal troops. Within 1868, following of the physical trouble of a building, a military occupation, & the depletion of the endowment, the College faced a severe fiscal crisis. St. John's Lutheran church inside Walhalla, South Carolina, in a extreme northwestern corner of the state, offered the College the recently personal & the offer was accepted.
